Xmas party milonga at our Chilworth Hall

So Saturday 18th of December is the date for your diary’s,

The doors will open at 8pm til late, we will try to make it irresistible for you to leave the dance floor, with top tango tunes from the late twenties through to the fifty’s with a sprinkle of Nuevo & modern, some great favourites with plenty of great new tracks

Featured song of the night is Poema :-

The lyrics of the Tango “Poema” was written by Eduardo Vicente Bianco with music by Mario Melfi and brought to success already in the 30’s by Francisco Canaro’s orchestra.

While the lyrics may be considered one of the most romantic tangos in Canaro’s (or even our) repertoire, the actual story is somewhat tragic.

In 1924, Bianco was playing as lead violinist in the orchestra of the Teatro Apolo, and it was there that he discovered his wife’s infidelity with the pianist (and his bandmate) in the orchestra. Desperate at the knowledge of his wife’s betrayal, he armed himself with a revolver and shot her lover to death.

Bianco was immediately imprisoned, but thanks to his political contacts, and also helped by his friend and colleague Natalio Botana (the director of the then influential newspaper “Critica”), he was then released under the ruling of the judge on duty. Later on, with the help of the famous dandy Macoco Unzué, Bianco would leave for Europe and would tour it triumphantly, performing with his orchestra before kings, princes and heads of state. He would also perform in Cuba and the United States.

On that happy note …..lets dance
